commUNITY at SC24

Please Note: Participation in the commUNITY opportunity is only applicable to individuals employed full time by a company or organization located in the greater Atlanta, GA area.

SCinet is the Supercomputing Conference's (SC) dedicated high-performance research network that is built by volunteer expert engineers from industry, academia, and government, for the purpose of the SC Conference.

There are more than 18 teams and over 175 volunteers that comprise SCinet, all focused on specic areas of expertise involved in setting up and operating this research network. Additionally, this year, SCinet is building a small scale HPC cluster for purposes of professional development and running identied workloads. Depending on the interests stated in this application, SCinet will identify and connect the nal candidates with a team and mentor during the conference.

The commUNITY initiative at SC24 aims to foster a welcoming and supportive environment for local network engineers and technical professionals to come together. Beyond technical skill development, we are committed to providing a robust professional development track, offering opportunities for skill growth and advancement regardless of background or identity. By prioritizing diversity, we enrich our collective knowledge base and perspectives, leading to more innovative solutions. Moreover, this initiative serves as a platform for building professional networks, facilitating connections that transcend traditional boundaries and promote collaboration and mutual support within the host city of SC24. Together, we strive to create an inclusive community where everyone feels valued, empowered, and able to reach their full potential.

Areas of Interest

In this section below you will be asked to rank your choice of SCinet teams. commUNITY participants will be placed with a SCinet team based on several factors including:

Interest
- using your rankings
Skillsets - as demonstrated by your application materials
Team size and availability - information provided by the team itself Schedules - both for the team and your stated availability

To better understand the complexity of bringing SCinet to life, the SCient teams are described below. The teams have been divided into three categories indicating the type of skills needed for the team. The categories are: Soft Skills and Operations.

Soft Skill Team:
While essential to SCinet the following teams require more non-engineering skills and less technical skills than the other SCinet teams. As with most of the other teams, they are year- long commitments that require attention to detail, tuned communication skills, and a requirement to work closely with other technically focused teams:

Help Desk
The Help Desk Team serves as the first point of contact for exhibitors regarding all SCinet services. The team provides tier-one support to exhibitors and escalates requests to other teams as necessary for resolution.

Operations Teams:
The operations teams require technical knowledge and often specic technical skills. On these teams you are typically given a set of projects/tasks to execute on over the course of the year, with a varying degree of responsibilities before, during and have the show depending on the team itself. Some of the teams involve physical labor, such as racking equipment or working with fiber.

DevOps
The DevOps Team runs the internal software infrastructure for SCinet and works to automate the ow of information to the various entities that need it. The team administers the main database that stores team member information and manages access, mail servers, customer connection requests, and congurations for tools operated by other teams. The DevOps Team also maintains the infrastructure that monitors and measures network ows to ensure services and provide alerts when there are issues, and operates critical network services such as NTP, DNS, and DHCP.

Edge Network
The Edge Team is responsible for the wired edge network for the SC conference. This team provides network connectivity for conference workshops and tutorials, conference committee rooms, conference registration, Network Operations Center, Student Cluster Challenge, and wireless access points throughout the convention center and the exhibit oor.

Fiber
The Fiber Team is responsible for building the physical layer of SCinet. This team installs miles of aerial and floor fiber to connect exhibitor booth equipment to the network.

Network Security
The Network Security Team is charged with protecting SCinet vendor, exhibitor, and attendee resources during the conference. Activities of the team include ltering harmful network trac, detecting and preventing compromised systems, and mitigating the effects of compromised systems.

Routing
The Routing Team is responsible for installing, conguring, and supporting the high-performance conference network. The Routing Team also coordinates external connectivity with commodity internet and research and education wide area network service providers.

Wide-area Network Transport
The WAN Transport Team is responsible for delivering multiple wide area network circuits to the convention center. Typically, this requires utilizing dark fiber resources in the facility, acquiring wave-division multiplexing transport equipment, and engineering, building, and supporting a metropolitan area transport system.

Wireless Network
The Wireless Team is responsible for the wireless network for the SC conference. This team provides wireless network connectivity for conference workshops and tutorials, conference committee rooms, exhibit floor, hallways and other public spaces.

System Administration:
This is a new sub-team for SC24. This team will design and build a small HPC cluster. The team will work to congure the components including hardware, operating system, and software stack to ensure networking and processing capabilities to deploy the system at the conference.

Please Select the top six teams you would like to participate in, in order of preference.
